Kū I Ka Pono: Protect Our
`Iwi Kupuna Beach Rally
Turtle Bay Resort, March 17, 2007
Approximately
200 people participated in a march and beach rally to protest Kuilima
Resort Company's lack of concern for `iwi kupuna (Hawaiian
burials) in their plans to expand the Turtle Bay Resort.
Previous
archaeological studies have revealed the presence of `iwi (human
remains) in the areas that the developer wants to build. The
State Historic Preservation Division has requested the developer to
perform updated site work and additional study before proceeding with construction
of a
new roadway, five new hotels and 1000 condominium units. Sadly,
the developer refuses to heed this advice, officially "withdrew" their
latest mitigation plan, and asked the SHPD to withdraw its
recommendations.
The
Beach Rally was organized by `Ilio`ulaokalani Coalition and Keep the
North Shore Country and supported by the Na Lei Nani O Waialua, Office
of Hawaiian Affairs, Defend Oahu Coalition, Sierra Club, Surfrider
Foundation, Hawaii's 1000 Friends, Da Hui O He`e Nalu, and Hawaii State
Body Surfing Association.
Clad in red, the couple hundred marchers chanted in Hawaiian as they
walked along Kuilima Drive to the beach. Arrival and welcoming
chants were exchanged and the crowd moved onto the beach. Along
the shores of Kuilima Cove, the crowd enjoyed hula and a beautiful
Hawaiian day. Vicky Holt Takamine spoke of the sanctity of the
burials and the importance in preserving them. Gil
Riviere spoke about the need for Kuilima Resort Company to properly
study,
report and allow public comment on all of the impacts that the
expansion might bring.
