Reasons to Support the Governor's Initiative to Preserve Turtle Bay

The Turtle Bay Resort is in Foreclosure.
What better time could there be to acquire a property than when there are no other buyers and the property must be sold?

It is in the State's Interest to Preserve the North Shore.
The cost to mitigate the traffic problems of a massive resort would be much greater than being pro-active now.  Another buyer may also want to proceed with the very unpopular expansion plan, so finding a solution now is the best action.

The community supports the existing hotel operations.
The resort provides employment for many residents and it should continue.
The State will not buy and keep the property, but can help with a successful transition of ownership while preserving the undeveloped lands.

The Governor Does Have a Plan
This initiative is complex and it will take time to determine the best approach to acquiring the property and determining the future for the property.  Creative solutions will be explored and the recent successes in preserving Waimea Valley and Pupukea-Paumalu show a strong and growing ability of communities to preserve important lands.

This is a non-partisan issue.
Thanks to Senators Hee and Bunda and others like them, the Legislature is now considering ways to move the land acquisition forward with SB 2423.  There are many important priorities to be considered by the Legislature, but the process has begun.  The will of the public is quite clear that  the North Shore should retain its rural character.
